Claire Doherty: The New Rules of Public Art

“Create space for the unplanned; Don’t make it for a community. Create a community; Demand more than fireworks; Get lost.”

Claire Doherty, writer, curator and founder Director of Situations, gives an introduction to the New Rules of Public Art – drawn from producing groundbreaking public art projects over the past fifteen years – and Slow Space, a programme of events and artist commissions set to unfold in Bjørvika, Oslo’s former container port. Doherty is renowned as a leading voice in public art curating through Situations’ work and through her publications, Contemporary Art: From Studio to Situation (2004) and the Situation edition of the Whitechapel Gallery’s Documents of Contemporary Art series (2009) and the forthcoming international survey Out of Space, Out of Time: Public Art Now.

Slow Space is conceived as a programme that will unfold over time, through collective activity, annual events and interventions in close collaboration with existing organisations and artist-run and activist initiatives across the city.

The second of four projects launches this month with artist Katie Paterson establishing Future Library – an artwork that will bring together the work of preeminent writers, thinkers and philosophers of this and future generations.
2014 will also see the second phase of Futurefarmers’ Bakehouse Bjørvika, a compelling proposition to build a permanent site for food production and bakehouse within the heart of the city.
