In the redoubtable main gallery space of Tramway 2, Swiss artist Christoph Büchel will create a fictitious yet highly believable environment constructed inside a series of shipping containers. Büchel focuses on elaborately realistic detail in order to create psychologically unsettling environments which are often explicit political commentaries or investigations into an era mediated war. Viewers will be challenged to explore sometimes claustrophobic spaces via a network of shipping containers, often taking on the role of victim and viewer simultaneously. The focus of Büchel’s installation at Tramway will explore the reconstruction of collective memory and the influence of new forms of media and propaganda on our collective imagination.
