Stuart Hall Foundation, ‘Who do you think you are? Culture, identity and the contemporary art museum

As part of Who Are We? Project, at Tate Exchange.

In collaboration with the Stuart Hall Foundation and chaired by Gilane Tawadros (Vice Chair of the Stuart Hall Foundation), this is a special event bringing together directors of major contemporary art museums in Europe to discuss how contemporary art institutions shape our sense of identity and belonging at a time of political and social turbulence.

Speakers include:

Okwui Enwezor (Director, Haus der Kunst,Munich) , Marta Gili (Director, Jeu de Paume), Francesco Manacorda (Director, Tate Liverpool) and Gilane Tawadros (Chair) is the Vice-Chair of the Stuart Hall Foundation and Chief Executive of DACS.

The event is organised by the Stuart Hall Foundation in collaboration with Counterpoints Arts as part of the ‘Who are We’ Tate Exchange programme, including partners at the Open University, Loughborough University and the University of Warwick.

    What We Talk About When We Talk About Work

    What We Talk About When We Talk About Work is a programme of public discussions bringing together curators and artists working across the north of the UK with creative practitioners from different European cities. The discussions are focused upon exploring ways of working outside, across, between and within existing institutional structures. Each event takes a particular thematic inviting practitioners toshare their current projects and their approach to working.The programme will launch on Thursday 2nd November 2017 at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, with events occurring regularly until August 2018. Each discussion will be broadcast live by this is tomorrow. The project has been developed by Laura Mansfield in collaboration with this is tomorrow, Contemporary Visual Arts Network North West, Yorkshire & Humberside Visual Arts Network, North East Contemporary Visual Arts Network and the participating venues of Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, NGCA Sunderland, Bluecoat, Grundy Art Gallery, The Tetley and The Whitworth. The inaugural event in the What We Talk About When We Talk About Work series of discussions takes the theme of‘Rethinking the Institution’. The participants in this event will explore the potential to establish alternative structuresfor supporting and engaging with contemporary art practices. Speakers include Miguel Amado, Senior Curator at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art; Binna Choi,Director of Casco, Utrecht; and artists Maurice Carlin and Emily Hesse.
