Salon 63 | Larry Achiampong

For Salon 63 Larry Achiampong will be performing a special site-specific work from 7-8pm from within Barbershop Fab UK on the Old Kent Road. Achiampong’s performance will explore his own personal archive and record collection, mixed with some of his familial records. The work will investigate traces of his own history and personal knowledge, particularly drawing from his own experiences of growing up in East London and the barber shops there, the experience of being part of a community. This sense of community belonging and spirit seems particularly pertinent given the continued threats of gentrification in the area, where many of these valuable community salons will soon be displaced.

LUX | Safety Glass by Suzannah Pettigrew

Safety Glass - by Suzannah Pettigrew - an interactive performance exploring relationships in online / offline spaces, takes place on Sunday 21st October 2018 at LUX, Waterlow Park Centre.

Safety Glass builds on a romantic drama script by Suzannah Pettigrew, which was initiated during a live-streamed GDPR data party, commissioned by Hervisions. It evolves through a real-time script development performance and includes a video installation and a poetry exchange. The audience are encouraged to direct-message text for the script throughout the event, which may be weaved into the script and projected back into the installation space. The script follows a series of exchanges between characters OUTPUT and INPUT who exist in an imagined online space that is mediated by offline generated imagery and real life encounters. The audience becomes a spectator on their first date, taking place inside their direct messages where they go to an e-restaurant and eat emojis for dinner. The script challenges the rhetoric and expectation of gender roles and attempts to dismantle them and redefines how we navigate our contemporary relationships. Exploring the compatibility of online and offline language and semiotics, the rules of social hierarchy in digital spaces and our constant data exchange.Throughout the live event a video installation consisting of visuals made by George Jasper Stone, conceived by Stone and Pettigrew, will be projected into the space that allude to themes in the script. A soundscape from cktrlwill play for the duration and reinforce the immersive experience. The performance will conclude with a poetry exchange between Pettigrew and poet James Massiah

The Artist Run Multiverse Summit | Day 1

The Artist Run Multiverse Summit brings together artists and artist run spaces and projects from the UK and Europe to think, talk, eat and sleep together and consider what artist run space is today, what artist run space might have once been, but no longer is, and what it might be in the future. Eastside Projects has invited five spaces, platforms or projects – Kunsthal Gent, Pallas Projects, Rabbits Road Press, Transmission Gallery and The White Pube – to frame this collective, public discussion. The two-day Summit is intended as a starting point for conversation, addressing the environments and ecologies we operate within, the function of artist-run space and the role of artists in the making of culture, community, infrastructure and policy that is responsive to all our needs.
