Parasol unit | Symposium | Capturing the Uncanny in Contemporary Photography
Speakers: artists Sonja Braas, David Claerbout and Elger Esser in discussion with Rupert Griffiths and Dr. Caterina Albano, moderated by Dr. Ziba Ardalan
A medium connected to modernity, photography has the amazing power to capture reality, while simultaneously staging the unreal, the magical and the frightening. With the advances of technology, the creative power of photography has taken unprecedented dimensions, resulting often in a sense of the uncanny. This panel discussion will explore various ways that the uncanny can be generated or exists in contemporary photography.
Rupert Griffiths is a researcher from Royal Holloway University of London and Dr. Caterina Albano is a Reader in Visual Culture and Science at Central Saint Martins.
