For the first show in Mexico of Matti Braun, the German-Finnish artist continues with his research into traditional forms of silk production, East meets West and cross-cultural misapprehension. Departing from historical figures such as Walter Spies within a meta-historical scenario, this new body of work forms the third part of a trilogy of exhibitions: Bo Lak at Esther Schipper Johnen Galerie Berlin and Lak Sol currently showing at Kunstverein Heilbronn. Sol Bo exhibits the final colour modulation of silk and sand that reflects the surrounding context, in this case Mexico City. With nineteen framed silk paintings – with references ranging from the ancient Silk Route to a now generic iPhone screensaver of a tropical sunset – locally imported sand from Veracruz is spread across the gallery floor. Even with the movement of migration made visible, the technical production and multifarious references of the pieces are not at once apparent.
