Maria Karavela was the first artist to practice performance in Greece. Because of the political aspect of her work she faced many difficulties from the ruling dictatorship. In 1970 she realised the first performance / installation in Greece in the ‘Hilton Gallery’. The police shut down the show after 1day and forced Maria Karavela into self-exile in Paris.
