Greengrassi presents its fifth solo exhibition of Frances Stark - a California based artist known for her playful and intimate exploration of social media networks. The exhibition is comprised of two elements. The first series of works - Starks’ ‘Clever/Stupid’ series - utilise ambigrams. An ambigram is a word or image whose meaning is changed when viewed or interpreted from a different direction, perspective, or orientation.
The second element is a four-part video essay. Stark has utilised Big Sean’s ‘I Don’t Fuck With You’ as the video’s soundtrack, and incorporated images culled from her Instagram account. Stark says of her use of Instagram: ‘The tension between the palatability of pop and the difficulty of the avant-garde is a persistent theme in the series of individual photographs I’ve been printing from my account on the popular smart phone app Instagram. At this juncture I have posted 2,451 images, and exhibiting selected images from this constant feed is a project I started early in 2014.’
